「この街のランドマーク的な存在になりたい」
「MIROC BREWERY」オーナー岩城知明さんインタビュー
倉庫を改装した飲食店が多い丸亀のみなと街。2018年にオープンした「MIROC BREWEZRY」も元は鉄工所でした。ブルワーの岩城さんは県外出身。海が好きな岩城さんは「海の街の酒場」をオープンするために、県内の海際を回って物件を探したそうです。そんな岩城さんが感じた丸亀のみなと街の可能性と、これからについてお話を伺いました。
ビールの多様性に惹かれて
まずは開業のきっかけについて教えてください。
29歳くらいの頃ですかね、それまで企業に勤めていたんですが、特に熱量もなくて、「このままだと先が見えるな」って思った時があったんです（笑）「30歳から何しよう」って。
で、この周りの人たちに負けないことって何かなって考えた時、酒しか出てこなかったんですよね。昔からお酒は好きでずっと飲んでましたから。それで、ウィスキーの勉強を始めました。最初はビールじゃなかったんですよ。僕はタモリさんが好きで、タモリさんがウィスキー好きなんです。それで、ウィスキーを学ぶために、初めてバーに行こうと。調べてみたら、サイレンスバーさん（丸亀市港町）があって、通うようになりました。
そうだったんですか。ではビールはいつから？
ウィスキーの勉強をしたいっていう話をサイレンスバーさんでしたら、バーを紹介してもらって、しばらくそこで働いていました。もう今は閉店してしまったお店なんですが、そのバーが世界のビールを豊富に揃えていて、少しずつビールに傾倒してくようになりました。
具体的にはどういった理由からですか？
バーって禁酒法時代に出来た文化なんですよね。なので、お店に窓が無かったり、重厚な扉で入りにくかったりという、どちらかというと非日常的な感じがあるんです。一方でパブは社交場なので、日常的なイメージですよね。そっちの方がワイワイ楽しくできるなと思って。
この辺りにはパブも無かったので、知らない人同士がパブで仲良くなれるようなお店にしたいなと、少しずつイメージが固まっていきました。
あと、ワインや日本酒は年に1回仕込むんですけど、ビールは早いものだと3～4週間くらいでできるんですよ。それに多様性も復元力もあります。例えばウィスキー樽で熟成して、ウィスキーの要素を与えるとか、結構ビールって自由なんです。
そこが岩城さんが思うビールの魅力ということですか？
そうですね。表現力の自由というか。そう考えたら、やりがいあるなと感じました。そして、それを提供できれば、自分で作ってるのでお客様にも伝えられるじゃないですか。ウィスキーのように1本1本勉強する義務感は無くなるなと。
そういうビールの世界を知ってもらいたいなと思ったら、気軽に来てもらえて、広めていけるブリューパブがいいでしょ！ って思いました。
「街を作りたい」そんな想いで丸亀へ
なぜこのエリアでオープンしようと思ったんですか？
昔から海が好きだったんですよね。造船業に従事してたこともありますし、海の家でバイトをしていたこともありました。なので、酒場を作るなら海の近くというのはなんとなく頭の中にありました。
でも、香川県って言ってしまえば、ほぼ海際です。何故丸亀に？
もちろん他のエリアも回ってみました。けど、その頃から漠然と街を作りたいっていう想いがあったんでしょうね。高松とかはもう出来上がってるので、選択肢としては無くなりました。そのあと宇多津で検討したこともあったんですけど、条件が合わなかったこともあって縁がなくて。そこから丸亀を見るようになりました。
この辺りは倉庫を改装したお店がちょこちょこあるんですよ。だから、自分も同じく倉庫を改装した物件でとがった業態をやればエリアとして今後盛り上がっていくんじゃないかという、可能性を感じました。
あと、この辺りは昔宿場街だったんですよね。それもあって、より魅力を感じるようになりましたね。時代は繰り返すって言うじゃないですか。そんな感じです。
実際にオープンして２年足らず、このエリアで過ごす時間が増えて、どのような街だと捉えてますか？
いや、それこそ最初まちづくりの話を聞いた時は「おっ！」ってなりましたよね（笑）丸亀市のリノベーションまちづくりの話は全く知らなかったので。街を作りたいという思いで始めて･･････僕はコマの1つに過ぎないですけど、「コマを動かす人たちがいるやないか！」って感じでした（笑）
それで、エリアのランドマーク的な役割になればと思って、外壁の時計をそれまでは動かない時計だったんですが、電波発信機を作ってもらって、今年の9月から動くようにしたんです。あの時計、よくないですか？
いいと思います！私もあの存在に気付いてからは、やっぱりつい見ちゃいますよね。
でしょ！？そうなんですよ。そんな感じになればいいなと。
丸亀から世界へ 「食」を発信していきたい
今後オリジナルビールをどのように展開していきたいと考えていますか？
お酒の席において、ビールはあくまで添え物で、一番の目的は人と人の交流だと思うんです。それをサポートするような立ち位置でいたいと思います。
スターウォーズに出てくる有名な言葉で「May the Force be with you（フォースとともにあらんことを）」というのがあるんですけど、それを文字って「MIROCとともに」というコースターを作りました。
あとは、ビールは瓶でも樽でも外販できるっていう強みがあります。ちゃんと美味しいビールを造れば、日本全国で販売していくことも可能と思っています。その先は海外も見ているので･･････そこまでいけば、地元の人がミロクビールに対して誇りを持ってくれるようになるかなと思っています。
「街をつくりたい」という、もう一つの展望についてもお話を聞かせてください。
いろんな専門店が集まって、1つのエリアとして楽しめるようになるといいなと思います。流動性のある街になるといいなと。そうすれば他の地方からも遊びに来てくれたり、移住者も増えるかなと思うんですよね。
実は最近、古事記を読んでいるんですが、まちづくりという点で考えた時にちょっと面白い話があって･･････
聞きたいです！
イザナギノミコトとイザナミノミコトが国作りをするっていう話は有名だと思うんですが、その正式な手順で最初に出来た島が淡路島、次が四国なんですね。で、当時四国は4人の神様がいて、讃岐国（香川県）の神様の名前が飯依比古（イイヨリヒコ）っていうんです。諸説あるんですが、この名前は「飯」という言葉がついてるだけあって「穀物が集まる」という意味があるらしく･･････食べ物に困らないということですよね。
で、この神様がどっかに祀られているんじゃないかと思って調べてみたら、なんと飯野山の麓の飯神社に祀られていたんですね。で、行ってみたら、飯神社は飯野山をご神体としているんですよ。
その辺の時代背景を踏まえると、丸亀ってやっぱり「食」を前面に押し出してやっていくのがいいんじゃないかと、個人的には思っていて。もちろん僕はビールを。

An Interview with Mr.Tomoaki Iwaki, the owner of "MIROC BREWERY"
There are a lot of restaurants which are renovated warehouse in Marugame port town. MIROC BREWERY, opened in 2018, was also used to be an ironwork. Mr. Iwaki is a brewer and is originally from the other prefecture. He loves the sea and had been searching for a real estate near the seaside in Kagawa for opening 'a pub in a seaside town.' He told us the potential of this port town and about the future.
Being attracted by the diversity of beer
Please tell me about your motivation for starting a business.
When I was 29 years old, I was not enthusiastic though I had worked in a company. "I know what I'm going to be," I thought, "What am I gonna do in my 30s?"
When it comes to my strength compare to the others around me, alcohol came up with my mind. I liked drinking alcohol and had been drinking since I was younger. That brought me to study whiskey. At first, it wasn't beer. I like Tamori, who is a Japanese comedian, and he likes whiskey. I decided to visit a bar for the first time in my life to learn about whiskey. I got information about the 'silence bar' in Minato-machi and started to visit the bar continually.
I see. When did you start to learn about beer, then?
When I told at 'silence bar' that I wanted to learn about whiskey, they introduced me to a bar, and I had been working there for a while. The bar is closed down now, was serving abundant beers from all over the world. I started to be interested in beer little by little.
Is there any particular reason?
At that moment, the bar was serving 500 or 600 kinds of whiskey. It was necessary to remember all of them and serve to customers. I wondered if I needed to do that as a duty. Furthermore, I felt being a bartender wasn't suit me because bartenders look kind of smart.
Since the bar is a culture which was made during the prohibition era, these are sometimes without any window, with a solid door, and people feel the unordinary atmosphere at bars. Meanwhile, we have the impression that pubs are an ordinary place for social gatherings, I guess. A pub would be a better place to have fun with many people.
There weren't any pubs around here at that time, and I wanted to make a place where strangers can get to know each other. I built an idea like this gradually.
Moreover, wine and sake are made once in a year, while it takes three or four weeks to make beer. Beer also has diversity and a restoring force. For example, it can be aged in whiskey barrels and given whiskey elements. We can do quite many things with beer.
You mean, that is a charm of beer?
Exactly. Beer can be creative. I realized it must be challenging. If I serve beer I brewed, I could tell the story to customers about it. I don't have to learn about every bottle of beer as I should do with whiskey.
A microbrewery, where people can come casually, would be perfect for telling and spreading the story about beers, I thought.
I came here with a desire to create a town.
Why did you choose this area for your pub?
I've always liked the sea. I was once working at a shipbuilding company, and I also worked part-time at a beach house. That's why I somehow had an idea to open a pub near the sea.
But you know, there are many seaside towns in Kagawa. Why Marugame?
Of course, I had searched around in other areas, but I already had my vague desire for a developing community around that time. Takamatsu city was already developed, so that I removed it from my choices. I once considered Utazu, but it didn't meet with my requirements, it wasn't meant to be either. Then I began to consider Marugame.
I saw some stores renovated warehouse around here. Therefore I saw the potential in this area that the town might be revitalized in the future if I do the other business with a renovated warehouse.
Besides, this area was used to be a post town back in the day. I realized this town more attractive to the fact. They say history repeats itself, stuff like that.
You opened the pub less than two years ago and have to spend a lot of time here. What's this town like as you perceive?
When I first heard about a plan of community development, I was like, "Yes!". I didn't know about Marugame municipality's strategy of community development by renovation. I had been having a desire to make a town, you know. Since I was just a piece of chess, "There are players who move the pieces!", I thought.
Last September, I ordered a radio transmitter for the clock on the outside wall to make it move again. Because it can be a landmark of this area. The clock is quite lovely, don't you agree?
I totally agree. After I noticed that, it always catches my eye.
Right? That's exactly what I want to make it happen.
Introducing our food from Marugame to the world
How are you planning to expand your original beer?
The most important purpose, when we get together, is interacting with each other, and beer is just an accompaniment. I want to be the one who supports these occasions.
In the Star Wars, there is a famous line, "May the force be with you," so I made a parody and created the "May the MIROC be with you" coaster.
Beer has advantages; we can sell them both with bottles and barrels. If I succeed in making a really good one, it would be possible to sell them all over Japan. The next target is overseas. If I reached there, the locals would be proud of MIROC beer, I guess.
Would you also tell me about the perspective of creating the town?
An area consists of several specialty stores, seems nice to me. I want the town to be flexible. That brings people from other cities and more migrants, I think. Actually, I am reading The Kojiki recently, and speaking of creating a town, there is an interesting story.
Tell me about it!
It is famous that Izanaginomikoto and Izanaminomikoto made regions. First, they made Awaji Island with an official procedure; then Shikoku came next. At that time, there were four gods in Shikoku, and the god of Sanuki-no-kuni(Kagawa prefecture)called Iiyorihiko. Although there are various theories, a name with 'ii(ee)' (which refers to food) suggests this area abundant with food. People here are rarely worried about hunger.
I wondered there might be a shrine worships Iiyorihiko and researched, then it is enshrined in Ii-shrine at the foot of Mt.Iino. I visited there and found out the fact Ii-shrine worships Mt.Iino.
Based on these stories, I think personally, Marugame should be connected with food and promoted. Of course, I'm in charge of the beer.
Isn't it gonna be interesting?
Definitely! Interesting!
That's right. Nowadays, I wonder if the citizens of Marugame know these facts.

Mr. Iwaki quitted his job just before he turns his 30s and made up his mind to start a brewery. Although there must have been hard without any experiences, he has a positive attitude toward his job and is enjoying 'right here and now.' MIROC beer to the world! We are on your side!
